What is Middleware?
Middleware serves as "glue" between systems, connecting applications on a network. Examples of middleware services include:
- identity management services
- authentication
- authorization
- directory services
- Middleware also often contributes to security measures since it can provide a more complex level of authentication, allowing system administrators to tailor user access and permissions to specific web applications.
Read about any of the middleware services on this site to get a good example of how middleware services are used at UC Davis.
